DUXBURY, Mass. -- Route 3 northbound in Duxbury was shut down after a line-painting truck overturned Friday morning.

The truck overturned after hitting a guardrail at around 2 a.m. Friday, causing it to spill paint over the roadway, and release fumes into the air.

The driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. He faces a marked lane offense.

Hazardous materials crews were on the scene because the truck was carrying 1,200 gallons of propane, and an estimated 600 gallons were spilled in the accident. Police originally feared the spill might spread to a nearby house, but the spill was successfully isolated to the roadway. Crews were also cleaning up the spilled paint, which hardened while on the roadway.

Route 3 was shut down between Exit 11 and Exit 12, but officials later opened up the right lane and breakdown lane before 7 a.m. Detours were previously in place around the accident.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
