Mother hopes to be buried alongside son killed in Iraq

MANSFIELD, Mass. -- A mother in Mansfield could be granted permission to be buried with her late son, who was killed in Iraq last year.

Denise Anderson's son, Army Spc. Corey Shea, 21, died November 21, 2008 when he was shot and killed by an Iraqi solder.

Anderson has been fighting with Congress for nearly a year to be buried next to her son at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, but her request was rejected by the U.S. Department of Veteran's Affairs.

The law currently allows only spouses and minor or unmarried children to be buried alongside servicemen and women at military cemeteries.

"He's alone and I don't want him to be alone for eternity," said Anderson.

Anderson contacted Mass. Congressman Barney Frank, who introduced the legislation to Congress.

On Tuesday, the House of Representatives passed legislation which would in special circumstances allow parents of fallen veterans to be buried with their child at U.S. cemeteries.

"I had like a sign of relief that I got over another hurdle," said Anderson.

The bill became known at the Corey Shea Act.

Anderson hopes that the Senate will be next to pass the bill.
