'Boy with cancer steps into uniform for day
GEORGETOWN, Mass. -- A young cancer patient receiving special treatment from a local police department.
Like most young kids, Connor Jones dreams big.
"I wanted to be a police officer for a couple years,” Connor said.
Even though he's only six years old, his dream to be an officer came true Friday at the Georgetown Police Department.
Officer Derek Jones met Connor through the Pan-Mass Challenge Pedal Partner Program.
Officer Jones will ride 190 miles to raise money for cancer research. The program gives hope to kids like Connor.
“I got cancer and it's leukemia...is that right?” Connor said.
Officer Jones' own daughter battled cancer inspiring him to give back.
"They deemed my daughter cured a couple years ago, so I thought I want to reach out to other families and ride in honor of them,” Officer Jones said.
Outfitted with his own uniform and badge, Connor was able to tour the police station, ride in a cruiser, and use a radar gun.
He even got a new bike.
"I thank Derek for all the surprises he gave me,” Connor said.
Connor’s mother said her happy and outgoing son inspires her everyday and that she knows this is just the beginning of his newfound career.
“People tend to get wrapped up in the fact that it's life threatening and they forget to think that he has a future and he hasn't let go of his goals and his dreams,” said Connors mother.
Connor has one more year of treatment at Dana Farber and his prognosis is good.
