'Reckless' Mass. woman denies abandoning baby
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- A woman faces charges of leaving her newborn baby in a West Springfield motel room says she didn't abandon her infant.
Tara Anderson told The Republican of Springfield Wednesday that she was "reckless" but said she was hiding in the bathroom after giving birth when authorities came to retrieve the baby. Speaking to a reporter from the Western Massachusetts Regional Women's Correctional Center in Chicopee, Anderson said she was in the hotel room to smoke crack.
The 37-year-old pleaded not guilty last month to charges of infant abandonment and reckless endangerment of a child at her arraignment Friday in Springfield District Court.
The baby girl, umbilical cord still attached, was discovered alone on a bed in a room littered with empty beer cans.
