Red Sox make pitch to save BPD mounted unit

BOSTON -- Red Sox owner John Henry is reportedly pitching a plan to save the Boston Police Mounted Unit.

The unit was disbanded last month because there was no room in the budget for its $700,000 price tag, but some people say the historic unit belongs back on the streets of Boston.

There are rumors that the Red Sox is stepping up to the plate to save the unit.

"It's effective crowd control; they're more mobile and powerful to control the crowds and keep them at bay," said John O'Rourke, who supports having mounted police.

"Instead of having cops getting clogged you have a cop more mobile that can patrol more areas," said Josh Smey, a local resident.

Sox owner John Henry is reportedly offering $400,000 to help fund the unit; however, Mayor Menino says its an offer he knows nothing about!

"I've never heard any offer from the Boston Red Sox about helping us with the horses," said Mayor Thomas Menino. "The commissioner did the right thing by keeping the officers on the streets of our city; that's what we need right now more officers on the streets of our city."

Commissioner Ed Davis said if the Sox did pitch such an offer the city would be receptive.

"It was certainly a financial issue that caused this to happen we'd be more than happy to talk to Mr. Henry or anybody else that would be willing to help us," said Commissioner Ed Davis, of the Boston Police Department.
