Chelsea homes at risk of collapsing

CHELSEA, Mass. -- Several residents were evacuated from their apartment building Monday morning when it was in danger of collapsing.

About 30 residents were told to leave after inspectors found a dangerous discovery.

"The foundation wall was kicked out, at least maybe one or two feet," said Al Legee, a building inspector.

"There are two walls that are compromised in the rear of the building that are in immanent danger of collapsing," said Dep. Chief Robert Zalewski of the Chelsea Fire Dept.

Officials evacuated 12 apartments at 40 Orange Street around 10 a.m.

"I was watching TV this morning, next thing I know there was pounding on the door and we just came out in our shorts," said Jose Arroyo, a resident.

Inspectors originally came out to stop renovation work that was unauthorized.

Officials hope to have residents back in their homes soon, but substantial repairs had to be made to the building.
