Ex-DiMasi aide wins Mass. election to replace him

BOSTON -- A one-time aide to a former state House speaker now indicted on public corruption charges won a special election Tuesday to replace him.

Democrat Aaron Michlewitz received 2,190 votes, easily defeating independent John Keith, who had 407 votes, and Republican David Trumbull, who finished with 120 votes, according to unofficial results from the Boston Elections Commission.

Michlewitz will represent Boston's North End, South End, Chinatown, Beacon Hill and Back Bay neighborhoods and parts of Roxbury.

DiMasi, a Democrat, resigned in January after 30 years in office.

He and three associates were indicted this month on federal corruption charges after they were accused of using his post to rig bidding for lucrative state software contracts. He's alleged to have pocketed $57,000, most of it in small payments of a few thousand dollars each funneled through an attorney.

DiMasi, Joseph Lally, Richard McDonough and Richard Vitale have pleaded not guilty and have been free after posting $10,000 bonds and surrendering their passports. DiMasi faces 20 years in prison for each of seven counts of wire and mail fraud and five years for a conspiracy charge.

The men were expected to appear in court Wednesday for a hearing.
