Elderly driver charged after fatal crash

STOUGHTON, Mass. -- An 88-year-old Canton woman was charged Monday in connection with the death of a 4-year-old girl who was struck and killed over the weekend.

Ilse Horn was charged with motor vehicle homicide by negligent operation, operating to endanger and failure to yield to a pedestrian in crosswalk.

Earlier Monday, the state revoked her driver's license citing "immediate threat."

Horn's driving record shows that she has been found responsible in five car accidents since 1982, including two in Newton in 2001

Diya Patel was riding her scooter with her grandfather at the intersection of Washington and Lincoln Streets just after 11:30 a.m. Saturday when she was hit by a car. The car was driven by Ilse Horn, 89, of Canton.

The accident is renewing calls for stricter regulations for elderly drivers on Beacon Hill.

This was the fourth incident involving an elderly driver this month.

The string of crashes started on June 2 when a 93-year-old man crashed into a Walmart in Danvers. A baby girl was seriously injured.

That driver had his license suspended.

The following day, a woman in her 70s drove her minivan into a crowd of people in Plymouth. Seven people were treated for minor injuries.

Two days after that, an elderly driver crashed into a medical supply store in Somerset.

State Senator Brian Joyce has proposed a bill that would require drivers over the age of 85 to take road tests every five year. Joyce is also calling for eye exams for elderly drivers.
