Bus driver accused of reading newspaper while driving

ARLINGTON, Mass. -- An MBTA bus driver was caught on camera with a newspaper laid across the steering wheel.

Elaine Palli was a passenger on the bus that was traveling from Arlington to Cambridge when she noticed what the driver was doing and snapped a photo.

"He opened it up. He's driving. He's looking. He's driving. He's looking. He's putting on the brakes 'cause he wasn't paying attention," Palli said.

Palli said that during her nearly 30 minute ride, the driver had the newspaper out the whole time.

"Where should his hands be? On the steering wheel. Where should his eyes be? In front of him. Hello. There was just an accident where nearly 40 people got injured," Palli said.

The MBTA has launched an investigation.

The push against distracted driving is on the forefront for the MBTA especially after the recent Green Line accident where the driver admitted to texting.

Palli said she had called MBTA officials before about drivers reading while driving, but she knew that she needed pictures. She is hoping the ones she snapped will force officials to look into this incident more seriously.

"You should not be reading a newspaper. He's not the only one and it needs to stop. Enough is enough. Where is the safety factor?"

MBTA officials said they have taken a statement from the driver and he will meet with management on Thursday.
