Police seeking stable homes for horses

BOSTON -- Boston Police and Parks departments will be forced to dismantle their mounted units by July as a budget cutting measure, putting 25 horses out of work.
The city plans to put the horses up for adoption.
12 horses are assigned to the Boston Police Mounting Unit, and they are specially trained in police work -- especially to handle crowd control.
Head of the Boston Police Mounting Unit, Sergeant Christopher Walsh, hopes that the horses will be adopted by other police departments.
"We have different police departments that have shown interest in taking our horses," said Walsh. "We would like to move them to a different police department if we can because they are already fully trained."
On Wednesday, Boston Mayor Thomas Menino proposed a $2.4 billion city budget that cuts 565 jobs, including teachers and police officers.
