School districts look to make up classes missed due to storms
GARDNER, Mass. -- School districts are trying to decide the best way to make up for lost time.
Because of all the snow days this school year, administrators are discussing options to make up the days they have missed such as longer school days, classes on Saturdays and cancelled vacations.
In Gardner, the school committee decided their students would not be getting their entire February vacation this year.
"This wasn't a decision anyone wanted to make. Nobody wants to take away vacations," said Carol Daring, superintendent of Gardner Public Schools.
Gardner took away four days from the February break and one professional development day in March.
Many parents understand the decision.
"They're just starting to get back into the swing of things," said Brian and Ann Marie LaRoche. "They need to be back in school."
A central Massachusetts school district will hold classes on two Saturdays and on two days previously scheduled as "no school" days to make up for a nine-day closure forced by last month's ice storm.
Wachusett Regional School District Thomas Pandiscio says if the calendar is not revised, the last day of school would be July 2.
The school committee accepted the new calendar at Monday's meeting.
Pandiscio says more snow days would mean more Saturday sessions to comply with the state's mandate of 180 school days.
