Needham students banned from hockey game
NEEDHAM, Mass. -- High school students were banned from Wednesday night's hockey game after the school's principal said the crowd was rowdy during a weekend game.
Needham High School's Principal Paul Richards sent a message to parents, saying as a punishment for being unsportsmanlike over the weekend, all students will be banned from the boy's varsity hockey game against Framingham.
Richards said in an e-mail that Needham fans taunted representatives from the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association who were at Saturday's game against Wellesley to observe fans from an earlier incident.
"Needham's student section chanted, 'Wellesley....Wellesley...you suck' several times," Richards said. "In addition, they chanted, 'Put your clipboards away," to the MIAA reps who were there to observe our fan behavior."
"Not a good scene, to say the least,'' Richards wrote.
"Wednesday's game in Dedham will be closed to student fans, with the exception of Framingham students who have photo IDs and are cleared at the desk by Framingham representative," he wrote. "Parents are still welcome to attend, but cannot escort or supervise their children at the event."
Richards said that banning students from Wednesday night's game is to prevent future rowdiness at games and to teach them a lesson.
A spokesman for the MIAA said that he supports Richards' decision.
"Everyone body loses in this, I don't know whether it will work or not," said a concerned parent.
