That Makes Cents reports

Many families are hitting the road instead of the sky to save on vacations this summer.

When you head to the pump, try to remember to fill up on Tuesday nights for the best price.

Jennifer Jolly, consumer expert
"That's because that's when the stations refill their pumps. You'll save a couple dollars every time."

And avoid gassing up over the weekend, when stations are the busiest.

Jennifer Jolly, consumer expert
"Gas across the board, anywhere you are in the country, goes up a few cents on the weekends."

Several websites offer information on where to find the cheapest gas.

Log on to one site, billshrink.com, type in your address and your destination, and it will list the spots with the lowest prices along your route.

Jennifer Jolly, consumer expert
"Gas varies $.50 a gallon from one neighborhood to another, so you can save as much as a $100, a $130 just on one four day vacation."

And use cash when you buy, because many stations give you a discount of up to 6% when you pay with green.

Jennifer Jolly, consumer expert
"That again can save you a couple hundred dollars, if you just use cash to buy your gas, throughout the year."

Now that makes cents.
