Room For Improvement: Traditional home
A living and dining area re-do means double duty for our design team, especially when the dining room has no table. So today we're heading to North Reading to bring a bit of formality, and furniture, to a family's home. 7's Lauren Przybyl has this week's "Room For Improvement."
Kay Metropoulos, homeowner
"We were never quite sure what we wanted to do with it and every time we went in to do something, I always got stuck."
And the adjoining space has definite dining room potential.
Nick Metropoulos, homeowner
"We'd like to have some area where we could, as a family, sit down together and enjoy."
So designer Melanie Murphy is here to tackle these two rooms so they can live up to the homeowners' expectations.

"It's a traditional style, very classic, very elegant and it's very tasteful and won't go out of style."
The inspiration for the rooms' design comes from the family's decorative dishes.

"We were able to take out the blue that was in the china. We used a monochromatic look."
Living Color Painting supplies a fresh coat of blue paint for the whole space.

"To warm up the walls."
Then Favreau Construction adds architectural elegance.

"We added the three piece molding to just help to bring the room a little more down to size. The wainscoting replaced a simple baseboard that was just at the floor and it just gives a nice definition and detail to the entire room."
Individual area rugs divide the space, while different types of new lighting help define each section.
A dining table and chairs are essential and a space saving display shelf showcases the beautiful china.

"We came up with the idea to do a built-in cabinet in the corner, and the family can now rotate their pieces on an annual basis."
New seating transforms the living room into a conversation area, while window treatments make it cozy and comfortable.

"It was a very traditional look that we were going after, so we chose to do the swags and jabots which add a lot of warmth and depth to the space."
And all that blue makes a big impact.

"There's different variations of the blues, which adds a lot of depth and texture into the room."
Now it's a place the whole family can enjoy.
Kay Metropoulos, homeowner
"Oh, this is fabulous! This is awesome!"

"Wow! We're so lucky!"
Well it looks like this family likes their two "useable" rooms.
