Room For Improvement: The Neely House
Tonight is the first night of a month of very special room makeovers. During November, our design team, with the help of generous donations, will be updating rooms at four local non-profits. Today we head over to The Neely House in Boston to get one of its apartments back into shape for the people who need it. 7's Lauren Przybyl has this week's "Room For Improvement."
Tucked away inside the Tufts New England Medical Center, The Neely House is a home away from home for a lot of people.
Patricia Rowe, Manager of The Neely House
"We provide housing for families and sometimes patients while they are being treated for cancer."
The Neely House, which opened its doors in 1997, was established by Boston Bruins legend Cam Neely and his siblings after they lost their parents to cancer. Its goal is to give cancer patients and their families a warm, friendly place to stay while they are undergoing treatment.
Patricia Rowe, Manager of The Neely House
"To feel safe, to feel comforted, to feel at peace."
Down the long corridors are 16 apartments, including this one used often by families with young children.

"We had just discussed shutting down that unit because it needed a re-do. So over a period of 10 years you can imagine that it took a little bit of a beating."
That's where Room For Improvement designer Melanie Murphy comes in. Along with a generous donation from Bernie & Phyl's Furniture, she is ready to get this room back into shape.

"I want it to be cheery and warm and inviting."
The walls are given a bright coat of yellow paint thanks to Boudreau Painting, brand new carpeting, donated by National Floors Direct, is rolled in and Bernie & Phyl's Furniture contributes some great pieces.

"So we wound up with a beautiful new TV cabinet, some great lighting, artwork and some accessories."
Then additional turquoise accents add calm to this room.

"Greens and blues are very soothing and we really wanted to step it up a notch from where it was."
Finally striped custom-made window treatments are hung by Reliable Fabrics.
Chuck Schultz, Reliable Fabrics
"By mixing in the greens in different shades it allows the colors to work from the floor up the wall to the windows."
It looks like this room is ready to welcome a new family.
Patricia Rowe, Manager of The Neely House
"Oh my, this is wonderful."
And it's thanks to all those generous donations that this apartment in The Neely House will be a comfortable "temporary home" for many families who need it.
