Room For Improvement: Porch playroom

An enclosed porch can have many different uses. So when one couple wants to create a warm and safe toy room for their son, our design team gives their little boy the perfect play place.

A porch can be a tricky spot to decorate. Just ask the Mendicina family, who wants to turn theirs into a playroom for their son, Timothy.

Lisa Mendicina, homeowner
"It's a three-season porch with pretty much nothing."

Jon Mendicina, homeowner
"It's very bare, there's no carpet [and] it's cold. It just doesn't have a warm feeling, like a playroom."

Our "Room For Improvement" designer Maxine Rosenthal knows a perfect way to make the whole family happy.

Maxine Rosenthal, MaxDesigns
"I envisioned one space where Tim would be able to play. And then, I envisioned another space where Jon and Lisa and their friends would be able to relax."

A tropical teal is picked for the walls and is painted by Claudio Damasceno from Finish Master Painting & Refinishing.

"I went with an exterior grade paint, which is a lot more durable and doesn't chip as easily as interior paint would."

A shelving unit helps separate toy land from the entertaining area and provides a lot of storage space.

Maxine Rosenthal, MaxDesigns
"It has very large baskets, and that way, we can hide the toys when Tim's not playing with them."

Wicker chairs with detailed pillows give the parents a comfy spot to watch over their son or to enjoy what little quiet time they have.

Some soft lighting and crafty wall decorations add a mature touch to the play area.

Greenery can help bring life to any room.

What a difference!

Lisa Mendicina, homeowner
"Oh my goodness!"

Jon Mendicina, homeowner
"Wow. Timothy look at your playroom!"

Lisa Mendicina, homeowner
"Look how beautiful it is."

Jon Mendicina, homeowner
"Look at your toys!"

Timothy loves his toys, and the whole family loves their new porch area which cost about $1,500 to decorate. And we got it done just in time for Timothy to celebrate his first birthday in his new playroom.
