Room For Improvement reports

In this week's "Room for Improvement," our Design Team heads to Boxford. They turn an ordinary finished basement into a fun and fabulous rec room. 7's Chikage Windler shows us the transformation.

15 year-old Sean MacDonald and his parents John and Charlotte are a fun-loving family.

Sean describes his likes: "Music and TV, movies, you know, regular teenage stuff."

His mother Charlotte adds that she and John are "both kids at heart as well. And we like the music, and we like to play pool."

Their pool table rests in their dark and dull basement in serious need of redecorating.

"Hey Charlotte, how are you?" asks Re-deux Design's Karin Curtin.

That's where designers Karin Curtin and Carol Iberger of Re-deux Design come in. Their goal: brighten the room, tie it together, and make it fun!

First, painter Tony Gaudet of Living Color Painting freshens up the walls.

They used to be a cold light blue color, and Tony explains the change: "It's almost just like an off-white, but it has a little brown and yellow in it, so it warms it up a little bit."

Next, the pool table gets personality.

Re-deux Design's Carol Iberger shows off the new billiards rack and says,"this was a unique piece that we found in the back room when you know where to look. And we loved it because of this (vintage look) and we have the Rat Pack picture on the back wall" that goes perfectly with it.

A billiards light and retro pub table complete the look.

Re-deux Design's Karin Curtin points out the fun accessories: "vintage popcorn bowl, straw dispenser, and some glasses (with pool balls on them) and so this is like a little vintage area."

The pool table area is just one of 4 sections of the room. The others: the foosball table/music area for Sean, the TV area for watching movies and playing video games, and the office/computer area for Charlotte.

By the foosball table, cd's fastened to the wall serve as creative decorations along with an Andy Warhol-style photo of Sean. A new storage cube replaces the old shelving for the MacDonald's record collection.

New shelving and a big bulletin board dress up and de-clutter Charlotte's office space.

For the TV area, a new entertainment center, coffee table, museum-style wall art, and lighting are added.

Re-deux's Karin Curtin says all 4 sections of the room work together. "It's a basement rec room that has turned into a great family living area, and everybody can hang out here."

Carol Iberger adds, "I can't wait for them to see it!"

And when they do, they can't believe the change.

The MacDonald family walks in and Charlotte reacts, "look at this! Oh my gosh! Oh, it's beautiful!"

The family shares hugs of appreciation with Carol and Karin for a job well done.

The MacDonald's budget was $3,000 dollars and our Design Team spent every penny to make sure this finished basement had a truly finished look.
