Parent to Parent reports

Some girls are learning that there's a science to cooking and they're applying math skills to the equation while they work.. It's all part of a program designed to teach some basic math and science skills in the kitchen. 7's Byron Barnett has the story in tonight's "Parent to Parent."

This may look like fun....but these girls are actually busy learning.

Alba Macharrie, diversity specialist and teacher
"It's all math and science and they learn about making sure they know what ingredients are, and that they know about flour and oils and food coloring."

It's part of a program called "Kitchen Science," sponsored by the Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts. Kitchen science teaches girls basic science and math skills using common kitchen utensils and measurements.  And the girls say it helps them in other ways too--

Aliyah Greene, student
"It will help me when I go to school and I have a math test, it will help me."

Kayla Trahan, student
"What I learned today is that I can use math anywhere."

Parents say they see a change in their daughters...

Martha Greene, parent
"She loves coming home and doing these things as soon as she gets home from school, 'cuz she loves it so much and the things she can do over here she can do at home."

And their daughters will be better women later in life.

Alba Macharrie, diversity specialist and teacher
"In their whole lifetime something like this is problem solving and it helps them create a better self image and better self respect and voice their opinion when they get older.
