Walking can also cut a woman's risk for hip fractures. Doctors at Brigham and Women's Hospital found that women, who walk four or more hours a week, have a 40 percent lower risk of hip fracture. Walking can improve balance and flexibility and strengthen the bone in the upper leg. Hip fractures send more than 300,000 people to the hospital every year, mostly elderly women.
