Slim chance
The end of the year is just around the corner and for many of us that means making a New Year’s resolution. One of the most popular resolutions is to get fit. If you're like most of us, you've made resolutions in the past, only to break them within the first month or two or even earlier. 7Healthcast Reporter Doctor Deanna Lites has some advice on how to make that resolution a reality.
Come January first, a lot of people will be hitting the gym, pledging to shape up this year. But the question is for how long.
Ryan Weber says, "I try to workout three to four times a week, mostly to stay in shape."
"I workout everyday and I do it because it makes me feel better," explains Jerry Tulis.
Peter Donohoe of Focus Fitness says there are some things you can do, to ensure your fitness resolutions are met. For example, come in with a goal and then meet with a fitness expert who can help you achieve it. He says, "The successes are people who start with a trainer, they devise a program specific to their needs, so that it's something they're working towards."
Pick something you'll enjoy so that you're having fun while reaping the health benefits. Schedule exercise into your daily routine just as you do meetings for work. Donohoe says, "Have a structure, make an appointment with yourself or with a trainer so that you have somebody to meet with."
And try to make exercise a part of your lifestyle. It doesn't have to be an all or none approach. A quick workout is better than no workout at all. "If you miss one or two days don't beat yourself over it. Just get yourself back on track again," explains Donohoe.
You can also make some small changes to improve your health. For example, use the stairs whenever possible and when you get together with friends try doing something active, like going for a walk, instead of grabbing something to eat.
