Sweet slim down
If you're dieting, sweets are a big no-no. But what if you could satisfy your sweet tooth and still lose weight...All with the lick of a lollipop!
It sounds too good to be true…Suck on a lollipop and lose weight. But that's the claim behind Power-Pops. The lollipops's key ingredient is Hoodia, an herbal supplement originally used by tribes in Africa to suppress hunger.
"It breaks down fat cells and toxins. You're gonna see weight loss just drop right off," Power-Pop inventor, Michael Wenniger said.
And he says that's not all...it also gives you a boost of energy.
Hoodia is sold in all sorts of diet products from pills to powders. And like other dietary supplements it doesn't need FDA approval. The makers of the Power-Pop say what makes their product different is the way you take it.
"When you look at how Hoodia is taken by the South Africans, they don't dry it out and grind it up and make pills, tablets and capsules out of it," Wenniger said, "How they take the Hoodia, in order for it to work, is they suck on it."
The makers say, to help lick away the fat, have one pop with a glass of water a half hour before each meal.
"I'll try anything to lose weight, if it's in a lollipop...You bet," Jan Coleman, of San Diego, said.
"I think having it candy would probably be really appealing to some people who are trying to lose weight without giving up sweets," Jasmine Elefgherakis, of Boston, said.
Nutrition expert, Dr. Caroline Apovian of Boston Medical Center, put the pops to the test for one day.
"I didn't feel any appetite suppression, I did not feel a boost of energy," Dr. Apovian said, "I think that people should stay away from these products because I don't think there's going to be a weight loss benefit or a health benefit."
But the makers of Power-Pops say they work...And the proof is in the pounds!
"We have about 20 to 30 people that have lost over 150 to 180 pounds," Wenniger said.
The 28 calorie pops cost $27.99 for a bag of 30. Again, dietary supplements don't need FDA approval, and remember it's always a good idea to check with your doctor before you start any weight loss plan.
