7 Healthcast: Oxygen facials
Archived Reports:
It's all the rage among the Hollywood stars. They say it gives their faces a smooth, healthy glow.
It's called an oxygen facial and at age 47, Madonna swears by oxygen treatments to refresh her face and keep her looking young. Many other stars also believe it breathes new life into dull skin.
"Typical clients are clients concerned with anti-aging. They like the oxygen treatment to kind of puff up the skin, get it glowing," esthetician, Michael Frey, said.
Frey says it works by spraying pure oxygen, enhanced with acids and oils, directly onto the skin. He says his clients love how it reduces wrinkles and helps with acne. Luana Botelho wants perfect skin because she hasn't seen her boyfriend in a while.
"He is a pilot in the air force so he was deployed for the past two months doing his duty," Luana said.
So did the oxygen facial give Luana back that glow?
"I feel a difference in the texture of my skin. It doesn't feel as tight," Luana said.
But Dermatologist, Dr. Eric Bernstein has his doubts, "Unfortunately, I'm not taking skin care advice from Madonna anytime soon," he said.
Dr. Bernstein also says you may get a psychological boost from an oxygen facial but not to hold your breath for better skin.
"I doubt that it could hurt your face but I doubt that it could help," Dr. Bernstein said.
But Luana is still game.
"If I can look like Madonna looks like at her age then, hey," Luana said.
Other doctors say blowing oxygen at your face is pure nonsense. The oxygen treatment costs $80, and if you want everything that goes along with it...that's $125.
