The heart of summer is here and with it comes 90 degree temperatures. And, the heat we've been seeing in the past few days can be dangerous for your health.7Healthcast reporter Dr. Deanna Lites has more.

The heat is on, but as the mercury goes up, so does the risk of getting a heat related illness.

"The sweltering heat can lead to dehydration pretty fast and we have seen an increased number of patients coming in with these complaints," Dr. Alasdair Conn of Mass. General Hospital said.

Dr. Conn says one of the biggest problems is heat exhaustion.

"It’s when you're losing too much fluid that your body doesn’t function correctly," Dr. Conn said.

Symptoms include fatigue, headaches, nausea and confusion. But if left untreated, heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke, a medical emergency.

"You become confused, your body systems begin to close down, you can’t regulate for example your own sweating so your temperature begins to rise," says Dr. Conn.

Young children and the elderly are at the highest risk for heat-related illnesses.

The best way to protect yourself is to drink lots of fluids, but avoid coffee and alcohol. Also, exercise in the morning or evening, when the sun isn't as strong. Don’t forget to wear light clothing and apply plenty of sunscreen before you head out.

"People say it doesn't apply to me, well it does apply to you. Please keep drinking those fluids," Dr. Conn said.

Be sure to check on the elderly, to see how they're coping in this heat..

And, don't forget to keep your pets cool and hydrated.
