Great Escape: Lazy Dog Inn
If you're planning a fall foliage trip, you might want to "check in" to a place that treats you and your four-legged friends like family. In this week's great escape, 7's Chikage Windler discovers a "doggoned good" getaway in New Hampshire’s White Mountains.
Dog lovers know that no vacation's complete unless you bring your best friend. In my case it's Boomer. He and I are going on a great escape to the granite state. It's less than a tank away.
Chocorua Village is the gateway to the Mount Washington Valley. It's just minutes from the "Kanc," a scenic byway known for its brilliant fall foliage. Spend the day leaf-peeping, then check in to the lazy dog inn.
Let's go inside, but don't forget to wipe your paws.
Once inside this 160-year old farmhouse, you and your pooch can't help but feel welcome.
"We treat all of our doggie guests as if they were our own dogs. And all of our guests as if they are our friends", says owner Steven Sousa.
"I'm the big dog at the lazy dog." Along with his wife Lauren, they have a ball catering to canines and their owners.
"This is your room. The roll over rose room. If you need anything during your stay, just let us know."
The rooms are accented with doggie decor, and thoughtful details just add to the charm.
And an even bigger treat awaits out back. This is where the dogs have the real fun.
It's an enclosed doggie playland, where old dogs can learn new tricks, and young ones can strut their stuff.
Steve Vore, a lazy dog inn guest, says "The play area is wonderful. Their own dogs accept guest dogs really well. It's just really nice."
"Well I think when the dog's happy, we're happy, especially traveling with the dog", says guest Donna Vore.
Sousa says, "the dogs can sleep in the rooms with their owners. We have the doggie lodge which is a climate controlled environment, each of our doggie guests has their own dog run, and we have the fenced in play area, and we provide doggie daycare. What more could you ask for?"
Well, you might ask for a gourmet breakfast. It's included in the room rate.
The cost, from 95 dollars to 190 dollars depending on the season and the day of week.
Recently named most pet-friendly B & B in North America, the Lazy Dog Inn just might leave you begging to stay longer.
